How to read a PDF aloud on iPhone
Audia turns your PDFs into audio with neural voices that work offline. There's just one condition: the PDF needs selectable text.
Will your PDF work? The 10-second test
Open the PDF and try selecting a sentence with your finger. If it highlights, the file has text and Audia can read it.
If you can't select anything, it's a scanned image and Audia doesn't support it. In that case, run it through an OCR (text recognition) tool first to produce a PDF with real text.
Step by step
Install Audia
Download it free from the App Store. No account needed.
Import the PDF
Tap the + button in your library and choose the PDF from your files. You can also send it from your computer: tap the Wi-Fi icon, open the address the app shows in your browser (on the same network) and drag the PDF onto the page.
Pick a voice and speed
Hear each voice before you decide and set the speed to your pace.
Press play
Audia reads the document aloud and highlights the word being read, with the screen locked or another app open.
Only want part of it?
Copy the passage, then in Audia tap + and choose Paste: a new text is created from what you copied.
FAQ
Can Audia read a scanned PDF?+
No. PDFs that contain only images have no text to read. Convert the PDF with an OCR tool first so it has selectable text.
Do I need an internet connection?+
No. Narration is generated on your iPhone or iPad and your text is never sent to a server.
Is reading PDFs with Audia free?+
Audia is free to download, with a daily limit on listening with premium voices. Audia Plus, a $9.99 one-time purchase, removes it.
What other formats can I import?+
DRM-free EPUB, MOBI, AZW, PRC, TXT, RTF, DOCX, ODT and FB2, plus pasted text and web articles.
